Nesconset
The area that would become Nesconset was a hunting ground habituated by Algonquin-Native Americans in the 1700’s. Colonists used tribal names to better identify parties engaging in land transactions. One of the tribe’s leaders known as Nassaconsett is how Nesconset got its name.
By the turn of the 19th century, a sparse population of farmers and seasonal residents lived along Middle Country Road. A dirt road network existed as Gibbs Pond Road, Browns Road and Old Nichols Road were carved out. In 1904, brothers Louis and Clemen Vion came to the Pine Barrens of the Nesconset area numerous occasions, as hunters. By 1910, the brothers removed a line of trees off Gibbs Pond Road…south of where Route 347 is today to create Midwood Ave. They built their home on this street, where it is still present.
As the population grew…a lumber yard, a general store, a post office and the first real estate office were constructed around 1908. The historic Nesconset Schoolhouse was built in 1910 and the Nesconset Fire Department was built in 1935.
