Commack

Commack is considered one of the oldest settlements in the United States. The name “Commack” comes from the Secatogue word Winnecomac (the original name before it was changed to Comac, then to its current name of Commack), which means “Beautiful Place”.

Commack is the town that I grew up in. My family moved from Queens to Cornell Dr. in 1968. A little know fact.. there is a cemetery in the middle of the Home Depot parking lot on the corner of Jericho Tpke. and Larkfield Rd.

The graveyard, used up until 1880 was for family members of the Burr family. They were one of the founding families of Commack. The surrounding farmland was used by the Air Force during World War 1, before it was sold off for development. The cemetery still exists today sectioned off by a chain link fence.
